"Crossroads"

Actors Speak Out

Crossroads Britney SpearsBritney Spears:
About her character: "I'm used to performing on stage and being confident with that, but this was just a whole new territory for me - it was so different. "But I had two weeks beforehand to really get an idea of who the character was, just to make me feel comfortable about things, and once I got on the set and I got the clothes on, to feel the character, that helped."
About Anson's humour: "Anson ate a clove of garlic! I felt bad because I thought maybe his breath was really that bad, and I didn't want to say anything!"
About her similarity with Lucy: "I'm shy like Lucy is and we're both good girls with good values and morals. But I also think she is kinda naive and very unassuming, whereas I'm more streetwise. Who knows, maybe if I wasn't in the job I'm in, I wouldn't be like that, I suppose I've had to grow up quicker I've had to grow up quicker than most girls."
About acting like a different person: "I thought it was going to be really difficult, but as soon as we started acting it just sort of clicked."

Taryn ManningTaryn Manning:
About working with Britney Spears: "It was an experience like I'd never had before. Basically it was really cool to hang out with a girl who has so much fame, and just be around her all the time. It was so surreal at times, yet she's so grounded and down-to-earth that it was almost as if I was working with someone who had never done anything. It was cool."
About friendship on a set: "We spent so much time in the car that in-between filming we'd talk, and get to know each other so much that by the end of the film, we were just so bummed."
About being Mimi: "One way was through the pregnant suit I had to wear every day. It was a leotard with a pouch that was filled with bird seed and mattress material. I could smell the bird seed some days! I spent many days in it, and there was a time when it really got to me. I would just break down and cry; I became this young, pregnant emotional little thing."

Zoe SaldanaZoe Saldana:
About the casting process: "Taryn, being that she lives here in Los Angeles, met with Britney. Britney did her reading with her. I just had to fly from New York and put myself on tape. By the time I got the film - I met Britney after the contract was already done and I had signed. There was no turning back."
About the movie: "Tamra Davis and the editor, Melissa Kent, guaranteed us from the beginning that they were going to be as truthful to the script as possible, and give every story its justice. I think Britney also wanted it to be that way; she didn't want a film about Britney Spears. She just wanted to do a film about friendship. I think that the staff - like Tamra the director, and Melissa, and producer Ann Carli - are highly responsible for that and for that, I'm eternally grateful."

About hanging out with Britney: "If her album wasn't going to be released right after we wrapped the film, we would have had more time. We have been playing phone tag. Taryn and I and Anson have had the opportunity to hang out more. But by the time we wrapped, Britney was just getting off of one project and jumping into another. It was impossible for us to just hang out."

Anson MountAnson Mount:
About filming process: "It was very nerve-wracking until I asked her to take it easy on me! We couldn't get the giggles out of the way and we were burning a lot of film."
About playing opposite Britney: "It was fantastic working with all three of those actresses, this one especially (smiling at Zoe Saldana who was being interviewed next to Anson). Working with Britney was great. She was very, very, very easy to work with because she's a natural. Britney's a smart girl and she knew that she needed to focus which required pushing the singing aside for a few months. She gave us the focus that was going to give her a good product. I think she got one."
About Britney as an actress: "I think that she could have a big future, if she wants one."
About kissing Britney: "It's always a little strange with whoever it is. But you get the giggles out of the way, you check in with the other person, and you just - with a hundred people watching - you kiss."

Crossroads Justin LongJustin Long:
About being Henry: "I played a guy named Henry. I'm high school chums with Britney in the beginning of the movie. We go to the Prom together and we have a nice little post-Prom Night scene. It's a small part but it was a lot of fun to do. Then I was in boxer shorts, sitting on a bed, with Britney in her bra and panties as she did this striptease two inches in front of me. So I work a tight jockstrap. I even entertained the notion of wearing two - but I figured one, really tight, would do the trick."
About acting opposite Britney Spears: "It was great. She was real natural. We did some ad-libbing and we just bounced right off each other."

Dan AykroydDan Aykroyd:
About plying Britney's father: "She told me that she and her mother admired my work and then offered me the role. Of course I knew who she was. When you have young daughters, YOU know who Britney, Christina and Mandy are or you're on a different planer. My girls - ages 12, 8 and 3 were ecstatic when they learned that I had to give poor Britney a really hard time. The dad is an ex-Navy, nuclear submarine expert. He doesn't want his daughter to be a star. He's so strict that she eventually runs away."

Movie Mistakes

  • Toward the beginning of their drive, while the girls are singing "Bye, Bye, Bye" the position of the window behind Mimi keeps changing. Sometimes it is all the way up, and then it is part-way down, then back up again;
  • When Ben changes his shirt, Lucy's locket disappears and then reappears;
  • Throughout the scene when the three girls are in the bathroom, Mimi has a pink toothbrush that keeps disappearing and reappearing from behind her ear;
  • Crossroads CapturesWhen the girls are singing "I Love Rock N Roll" at the karaoke bar they always scan back to Ben sitting at the bar. One of the times they scan back to Ben, you can see the camera man in between a girl sitting on top of the bar next to Ben and a girl sitting on a stool. This happens in between those 2 girls who are sitting to the left of Ben. It goes by really fast so you might have to pause it;
  • When the car was broken down and the girls are about to fight, Britney is on top of the car about to get off. If you look closely at her, she gets off the car two times;
  • While at the hotel in LA and Kit is talking on the phone, Mimi can be seen in the background unpacking her bag. A one point Mimi walks on camera, looks in and around the stuff on the bed then turns to someone off camera and shrugs and by her mouth you can tell she is saying "Where?". Whoever she is talking to is not another character, as all the others can also be seen behind her;
  • When Lucy is telling Mimi off for not actually knowing Ben, or telling them he was an alleged murderer, Lucy's towel slips and you can see the top of a pale beige bodysuit;
  • When Mimi is in hospital Lucy stands at the door and Mimi has a tube in her arm. Then when Lucy goes over to the bed the tube has disappeared. Then later it appears again;
  • When Lucy, Kit, and Mimi are singing "I love rock 'n' roll" Lucy has glitter eye shadow on, but when the get to the motel that same night, she has on blue eye shadow;
  • After the first motel stop, Lucy and Ben are talking and the camera pans back and forth between the two. Each time it hits Lucy her purse straps have magically repositioned themselves on her shoulder, without her help.
  • When the girls are digging up the box, Lucy says, "Me either" as she is bending down, but if you look closely her lips are not moving;
  • When Ben, Mimi, Kid and Lucy are in the waffle house talking, you see Ben is eating a sandwich, in some shots he is holding the sandwich, then it is on the plate, then he is holding it again;
  • In the bathroom scene at the motel where Lucy is in the shower and Mimi is using the toilet, Mimi flushes the toilet and Lucy yells "Ahh, freaking cold," however, if someone flushes a toilet whilst another person is in the shower then this would result in the cold water being removed from the shower, so Lucy really should have yelled "freaking hot," unless the toilet water was hot water;
  • In the scene where they first start traveling towards California, you can see that in one shot Ben's car has a rearview mirror, but in the next shot there is no rearview mirror. It goes back and forth like that several times before they go to the diner to count their money supply;
  • In the scene where Lucy, Mimi, and Kit are digging up the box they had buried earlier in the movie, look at the first thing that they pull out. It is a Barbie that belonged to Kit with nothing under it. Soon you will see a locket, key chain with a globe on it, folded piece of paper, and a picture. Where did those items from, there was certainly no space left in the area;
  • In the car when Ben is telling the girls about why he was in prison you can see that Kit is braiding Mimi's hair but in the next scene when Britney is debating on whether she's going to call her mother to give her notice, Mimi's hair no longer has the braids in them. When they are dropping Lucy off at her mothers house the braids are back in again;
  • When they are singing "I Love Rock N Roll" at the end of the song Britney is standing in the middle of the stage with the girls behind, then she is on the platform with the poll, and she keeps going back and forth;
  • At the start of the movie, in the scene where Kit and her gal pals are walking down the carpet in their prom dresses and Lucy is standing at the bottom of the stairs leaning against the banister - you will notice that behind them a little in the distance is a guy and a girl. Kit and her friends walk past Lucy and after they have gone, next shot Mimi is walking up to Lucy, as if she was walking behind Kit and her friends the whole time. You will notice that behind Mimi is that couple that were behind Kit and her friends. Where did Mimi come from? She definitely wasn't behind the girls;
  • When the car pulls up to a hotel in Alabama, the sign underneath the hotel name reads "vacancy". When they show Ben and Lucy talking outside, the sign has changed to "no vacancy". In the next shot, it is back to "vacancy";
  •  After the girls spend a night in that fancy hotel after the Karaoke contest, in the morning Lucy leaves with blue pants on. When Ben falls asleep in the back of the car, Lucy is shown wearing gray pants;

"Crossroads" Quotes

  1. "When we were ten growing up in Georgia, Mimi, Kit and I... knew exactly what we wanted out of life.  So we put our dreams in a box, and we buried it. We have to keep it dry. We made a pact to dig it up at midnight... the day of our high school graduation.  Now, I don't even remember what our wishes were - except for one. We wished that we'd be best friends forever. Well, that wish didn't come true..."
  2. Crossroads CapturesKit: Watch where you're going!
    Lucy: You ran into me, Kit.
    Kit: What, you're too perfect to bump into anybody?
    Lucy: What?
    Kit: Perfect. Sweet, proper... nerdy and virginal.
    Lucy: I'm not...
    Kit: You're a virgin.
  3. Lucy: Dad, I never went to one football game.
    Father: You don't like football.
    Lucy: But you're supposed to go, and it's supposed to be fun. And like all the parties at Hemmings Field and stuff... I never went to any of them. I never stayed out late. I never just hung out.
    Father: 'Cause you had a head on your shoulders. You stayed home, and you studied.
  4. Henry: Are you ready?
    Lucy: Yeah, yeah, just two seconds. Henry, are you ready?
    Henry: I'm ready. That's okay. Go on. Why are you stopping?
    Lucy: This isn't how I hoped it would be.
    Henry: That's weird, 'cause this is exactly how I hoped it would be... or pretty accurate.
    Lucy: Maybe if we get into bed.
    Henry: That's a good idea.
  5. Kit: You're going to California to audition for a record company?
    Mimi: Yeah.
    Kit: You're pregnant.
    Mimi: So? I'll wear something slimming.
  6. Mimi:  I can't believe you only brought $40;
    Kit: I have expenses. I had to have my homecoming dress custom-made. I was voted queen, you know.
    Mimi: Oh, my dream comes true.
  7. Ben: What are you doing?  Nobody touches this except for specialists and myself. Because it's an antique, and I don't want people to.
    Lucy: It's your radiator.
    Ben: No, it's the head gasket.
    Lucy:  No, your radiator's cracked.
  8. Kit: Third year at fat camp, the summer before eighth grade.
    Mimi: Wait, that camp you went to every summer was a fat camp?
    Kit: Yes, and I loved it. My mama wasn't around to pick on me for being fat. Being fat is just unacceptable to her.
  9. Lucy: One morning I woke up, and she was gone. Dad eally ould 't say anything about it. I thought she was coming back, and Dad told me she wasn't. They fought all the time. You now, I think that she just got fed up and took off without even thinking. And after a while, it was just too l te to come back. I know she wants to see me. She's just scared, hat's all.
  10. Mimi: Get h s keys.
    Kit: Yea , get his keys.
    Lucy: W y do I have to get his keys?
    Mimi: Because Kit and I voted and you lost.
    Lucy: This is stealing.
    Mimi: It's not stealing if he's in the car.
    Lucy: No, it's kidnapping.
  11. Ben: Stop the damn car!
    Kit: Mimi, go talk to him.
    Mimi: Uh-uh, you go talk to him.
    Lucy: Nobody's gonna go talk to him.
    Mimi: And he has killed before.
    Lucy: Mimi, you said he didn't kill anyone.
    Mimi: I said I thought he didn't.
    Lucy: It's okay, I'll go.
    Mimi: Be careful, Lucy.
  12. Lucy: We're sorry.
    Ben: I've been in a car full of chicks. Do you have any idea what it's like being surrounded by g rls? Being a girl yourself, I know, stupid question. I'm a guy. Just a guy. And I have been listening to girl talk and watching you do your girl things for days. I'm not complaining, 'cause, let's face it, I'm outnumbered. But that's my car. It's my car, and it's just the one thing that hasn't been taken over by chicks. Okay?
    Lucy: Okay.
  13. Mimi: I'm gonna go to the ladies room. Where is it again?
    Lucy: Third bush after the rock over there.
  14. Lucy: What's wrong?
    Mimi: Something bit my ass. It's a snake bite.
    Lucy: No, Mimi, that's a mosquito bite.
    Mimi: Don't look!
    Lucy: How could I not? It's nothing.
    Mimi: Bu it could've been a snake.
  15. Father: Just what were you thinking, running away with a pregnant girl! Lucy, I'm waiting for an answer. Do you know what it took to come here? I had to take cash out of savings for plane fare and hotel. I worked hard to earn that money for your college education.
    Lucy: I'm sorry.
    Father: So you made a mistake. I understan . Everybody makes mistakes. You're forgiven.
  16. Kit: Mimi and I were talking and we were thinking.
    Mimi: That you need to stay and go to the audition.
    Lucy: Guys, I can't do that.
    Mimi: You've got to. Kit and I voted, and you lost, so you've got to go.

Reviews:
"Rolling Stone": "Watching Britney Spears act in Crossroads can seem like the ultimate in excitement."
"Entertainment Weekly": "...Britney has been delivered to the big screen safe and sound, the way we like our 20-year-old superstar girls to travel on the fame freeway."
"NY Post": "...So mind-numbingly awful that you hope Britney won't do it one more time, as far as movies are concerned."
"Rotten Tomatoes": "…You'll be unhappy too if you go to see "Crossroads" unless you're a dedicated Britney Spears fan. She is a really cute girl with the world's whitest teeth. But, even if she's really cute, her movie is really bad."
"USA Today": "...Enter the girl power. They're no Thelma and Louises, but Britney and her two Georgia gal pals (Zoe Saldana, Taryn Manning) take to the road and set their sights on California. Rekindling the friendship they had as 10-year-olds, the three find a way to parlay their singing into an act, while transforming their clothes into glamorously skimpy costumes. Britney proves she's not that innocent when she wows the locals in a Louisiana bar by suggestively crooning Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'N' Roll". Along the way, Britney falls for a hunk (Anson Mount) and loses that pesky virginal stigma."
"Fox-TV": "The movie is a perfect teen dream. It has everything that makes a movie totally cool: laughs, adventure, spirit, hot music, drama and of course Britney!"
"Chicago Tribune": "All things considered, Crossroads isn't great filmmaking, but Spears herself isn't bad."
