The saga of Prince William and Britney Spears is priceless. The idea that the Queen's grandson and the most famous teenage pop star of the time were infatuated with one another occupied page upon the page of press coverage. Amid all the speculation that she might one day be Queen Britney it was conveniently forgotten that she was very happy with Justin. Nobody was meant to know about that.
The rumors started in the end of 1999 when it was revealed that William had a crush on Britney. He may well have fancied her. He was 17 and she was the most popular teenager. She sent him a signed copy of her album and a selection of some photographs. He invited Britney to a millennium party, but her schedule prevented her from being able to attend. Also Britney had quite an effect on the prince.
According to reports, the pair of potential lovebirds were apparently supposed to meet up when Britney was in London but it had to be cancelled when the press heard about it. In a book "Heart to Heart", which was written by Britney and Lynn Spears, her mother wrote that William was a big fan of Britney and that they were supposed to go to Buckingham Palace but William called it off because he was foxhunting.
In 2000 it was announced that Britney was buying $2.2 million house about 20 minutes from William's family home. Then sources close to Britney reported that she broke down in tears when she found out that Prince was dating a more socially acceptable girl. "She thought she had a real shot at a close relationship even though it was mostly through letters and e-mails. She was hoping they would hit it off big-time when she performed in England. William even invited her to his 18th birthday party in June and she couldn't wait."
Later in the press Britney was quoted, "I would love to marry Prince William. Who would not want to be a princess?" Buckingham Palace was not thrilled with this one-sided romance, and Prince William told that he didn't like being exploited in this way.
About her relationship with Prince William Britney said that they exchanged a-mails for a little bit and he was supposed to come and see her somewhere but it didn't work out.
