They were made for each other. Britney Spears was only 11 years old when she met a super-cute boy from Tennessee named Justin Timberlake. Both were living in a dorm in Orlando at the time, with the rest of the cast of the Mickey Mouse Club. They spent their days singing, dancing, acting, and on their breaks, riding the rides at Disney World. The talented twosome got along really well, and they quickly became close. Justin even gave Britney her first kiss ("He was very sweet," she said). But after two seasons, the show ended and Britney had to say good-bye to her new friend and return home to Louisiana. Back home, Britney realized that she wanted to be the queen of pop music more than the high school homecoming queen. And she definitely wanted to keep in touch with that cute Justin guy!
Fast forward to late 1998. Britney kick starts her solo career by opening on tour for a group called 'N Sync. Who should be a member of 'N Sync, but her old friend Justin Timberlake! The two once again get to spend quality time together. Rumors begin to fly that they are dating, but Britney denied they're anything more than just friends.
Fast forward to 2000. Britney and Justin have known each other for seven years. She's become a huge star with a busy schedule to match, and he's the heartthrob member of one of the biggest bands in the world. And yet the two 
have always managed to make time to see each other. In spring of 2000, Britney and Justin were spotted shopping together in Los Angeles, tooling around in a rented convertible. Britney admitted to a reporter that she "adores" Justin and kisses him "sometimes." Later Justin was spotted in Hawaii where Britney was taping a concert special. And then the surprise news came: "Justin pops the question!" read the headlines. They both insisted the engagement story was completely untrue. Later Britney flew across the country to New York in time to party with Justin after an 'N Sync concert. And then they stayed out until 3:30 in the morning! They insisted that they are not an item again. However in the end of 2000 Justin has actually admitted to dating Britney on the Rosie O' Donnell Show. It was the worst-kept secret.
In the middle of 2001 Britney declared that she was "very much in love" with boyfriend Justin Timberlake. "He's such a beautiful person inside and out. We have so much fun together. He makes me laugh." She and Justin were initially reluctant to make their first outing as a couple at the "MTV Video Music Awards," where their relationship moved to another level. "We weren't going to go together, but beforehand Justin was like, 'Isn't this kind of weird? You're here with me, and we're not going with each other.' I was like, 'You know what? Who cares? Let's just start.' And since then ... we can't be away from each other."
For Britney's birthday, Timberlake took her to Palm Springs, Calif., for three days. As a present, he also gave her an entire bedroom set. Several weeks later they sneaked off to Vail, Colorado. When she was asked the question whether they had sex, Britney demurely said, "That's something I'd like to keep personal. I want to try to keep a personal life." But she added she still has the same views about virginity. "I want to wait to have sex until I'm married. I do. I want to wait ... but it's hard." Justin's grandmother clamed that both Justin and Britney were virgins and that Justin did not believe in sex before marriage because he had high moral values.
By September 2001 they were living together in Los Angeles and friends who went to visit them described them as an old, married couple. But Britney was quiet, modest and thoughtful. They were a couple who very rarely let the public into their true lives. The tenderness between the two of them, however, could not be concealed for ever.
Later Justin has revealed that the first time he and Britney had a real date was when they went out to dinner in Los Angeles. A glimpse at the tour schedule reveals that they were in California in early January 1999. They were both quizzed by MTV later in the month about the rumors that they were dating, Britney denied the rumors.
Justin and Britney were photographed draped all over each other at her 18-birthday party in December 1999. For her 19 birthday in 2000 he ordered twenty-six dozen roses to be placed in her suite at the La Quinta hotel in Palm Springs. He arranged for the petals of another ten dozen roses to be scattered on the carpet and on the bed. It was like something out of the romance novels Britney liked to read. He also gave her, among other presents, a day at her favorite health spa. On her 20th birthday party he bought her a dozen of presents, including some silver candelabras, Baccarat crystal glasses and a teddy bear in her favorite color of baby blue.
Britney's time with Justin was happy and comfortable. Besides the shared experiences, they both loved basketball and could laugh at the same things. He called her Pinky and she called him Stinky. They were also both expert in pulling goofy faces. Justin gave Britney a $100000 ring, and she bought him a lot of presents, leather jackets, leather coats, leather trousers, cashmere sweaters and jewellery. She bought him a $30000 diamond-encrusted watch engraved with words, "To my Justin. Love you always."
For a while they were the number one couple in the world. Once thieves broke in their house and stole video equipment, clothes and other personal things belonged to the couple. According to rumors, a video tape allegedly contained footage of Justin and Britney making out. Police arrested a gang of teenagers before they had the chance to post the movie on the Internet. The exact content of the stolen footage remained a secret.
In March 2002, by everyone's surprise, Justin broke up with Britney via his cell phone before a concert an 'N Sync concert in Washington.
The media went wild with these reports. They placed the blame on conflicting schedules and infidelity. Some reports said that Justin was getting very passionate with his dancer. The rumors were so widespread that Britney was compelled to go on awards show and let her fans know that she and Justin were still a couple. Throughout the month Britney tried to deny that their relationship was on the rocks. In March she flew to London for a press conference at which journalists were banned from asking her questions about Justin Timberlake. But one question about relationship was asked, however. Britney answered that she wasn't in an intensive relationship with anyone at that moment. She was single. The break up rumors, it turned out, were true. Britney and Justin, as a couple, were no more.
Britney has changed her lifestyle immediately. Now her best friend was not Justin but a cigarette, alcohol and parties till the mornings. Reports about Britney smoking and drinking increased. It seems a week couldn't go by without reports of Britney drinking one cocktail too many here or smoking a cigarette in public there. And between this Britney asked Justin to give her another chance. She called him many times, but each time she did it she just cried.
Ironically, they had too much information about their relationship when they were no longer a couple. Justin claimed all his first three girlfriends had cheated on him. Britney was the third. Justin's mother added flesh to the rumors that her son and Britney are just having problems right now. Three weeks after Britney and Justin broke up, he already enjoyed his single status. He has been partying with his pop band colleagues in Las Vegas and blew 200,000 on a 24-hour gambling and booze spree. They dined on lobster, caviar and champagne, and then lost heavily gambling before partying with a crowd of strippers. Every few minutes Justin would throw $100 bills in the air and shout "God Bless America!"
To make things worse Justin was seen in the company of woman. She did date Justin a few times after he had split from Britney, but it was nothing serious. Once Justin and a pretty, brunette date arrived at The Lounge nightclub in West Hollywood around midnight. Not long after Britney came in with a girlfriend. They ran into each other at the front door. Brit said "Hi" to Justin, but he just turned his back on her. She was so embarrassed and hurt by Justin's behavior and she had no idea what she has done to make him want to treat her so badly.
Britney was crying buckets over her split from Justin and needed a shoulder. Over a period of twenty months she went spectacularly off the rails in her personal life while trying to keep her professional career in one piece. Justin, however, seemed able to channel his very real upset into a great surge of creative energy. He recorded his debut solo album "Justified", two of which songs were about relationship with Britney - "Never Again" and "Cry Me a River". The lyric of "Never Again" includes the sentiment that the unnamed girl did not say sorry when all she had to do was apologize. The most notorious burst of creativity came with explosive video for "Cry Me a River." In a video Justin shows what Britney has made him - a broken man. A Britney look-alike was cast in a role of a cheating girlfriend. Justin played the wronged man. Britney's look-alike was wearing cap and a pair of sunglasses, two of Britney's favorite accessories. The video shows Justin standing alone in the rain outside an ex-lover's house, watching the ex-lover leave with another man. It is clear by mope on his face and the pain in his voice that he is lost, hurt and aimless. With the ex-lover gone, Justin takes his revenge.
When Britney saw this video, she was really shocked and didn't know what to say. "I was shocked to s***. First time I saw it, I thought: 'Oh my God, it's me.' It was' a little weird, but if that's the way he has to deal with things, that's fine. And he got a number one video..."
Britney couldn't believe when Justin went on the Barbara Walters TV Show and told about their sex life. Actually he didn't say much, but when Walters asked him if they had stayed true to Britney's values, he answered "sure." However he had much more to say on a radio show. He admitted that they had an oral sex. He said it was a joke, but Britney didn't find it funny at all.
Britney even made an attempt to reconcile in the end of 2002 once more, showing up at Justin's house under the pretense of picking up some things she left there. Britney bought wine and pictures they took together, and talked about good times. But Justin was cold to it, probably figuring he'd gone through as much as he could take. When subtlety didn't work, Britney broke down crying and apologized, professing her love. When that didn't work, she disappeared into his bathroom and emerged wearing one of his shirts. In the end, Justin told Britney in no uncertain terms that they were over and she ran crying from his house.
However, at Britney's 21st birthday party Justin and Britney were seen together in New York, looking very cozy as they stumbled toward Britney's splashy Manhattan condo. They walked into Britney's building hand in hand, and once they were inside the lobby, they started making out and kissed all the way to the elevators. They had their arms wrapped around each other. No one would never know that they'd even broken up.
For almost a year Britney had been clinging to the hope that she and Justin might get back together. Everybody wanted it to happen. However that changed in spring 2003 when Justin met Cameron Diaz at the "Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards" and asked her to go bawling. From that moment Britney was replaced by Cameron both privately and publicly in Justin's life.
On July 18, 2003 there was almost an awkward encounter at a Miami nightclub. Timberlake was on tour and also promoting his charity, "Challenge for the Children," in Florida. At around 12:30 a.m. Timberlake arrived at "Prive", with his girlfriend Cameron Diaz. Timberlake and Diaz proceeded to heat up the dance floor. Spears arrived about two hours later, entourage in tow, and was put on the other side of the club because it was a sensitive issue, and the club didn't want her to know he was there. Britney decided to take a stroll through the club about an hour later and apparently saw Timberlake and Diaz dancing. She stared at them for a minute and then immediately stormed out. Justin didn't even realize that she was there.
In August issue of "W" magazine Britney spoke frankly about her relationship with Timberlake. "I've only slept with one person my whole life. It was two years into my relationship with Justin, and I thought he was the one. But I was wrong! I didn't think he was gonna go on Barbara Walters and sell me out," confessed Britney.
The exact reasons of this hurtful break up are hard to pin down. Did Justin cavort with hot brunette? Did Britney cheated on Justin? Some sources have said that the real reason for the end to their relationship was that during a heated argument, Britney confessed that she had been fooling around with Ben Affleck for two years. Others named Wade Robson as the interloper who caused Britney to stray.
Britney said she would not get back with Justin, because their relationship could never be the same again. In the end of 2003 Britney confessed that she and Justin are friends. She said she was happier without him than she would be if they were still together. A fairy tale had reached its end...
