But the likelihood of Britney Spears and Jared Leto - exes of couple Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz - bumping into each other, as they did on August 16, 2003 seemed unusually serendipitous. That Saturday night, Spears arrived at hot eatery "Dolce" around 9 p.m. with two girlfriends and her bodyguard. Seated on the outdoor patio, where Leto and some pals were dining at a separate table, the actor-musician made the first move. They had a mutual friend. Jared came over to say hello to one of Britney's girlfriends. Soon he and Spears were deep in conversation. He was leaning into her and talking closely for a long time. They seemed pretty happy and they were smiling. At one point the pair sat alone at a patio table in an enclosed area.
Clearly, the new friends hit it off. After dinner, they even jointly went to Ben Affleck's thirty-first birthday party at the "Concorde" nightclub in Hollywood. When they showed up a buzz went around the place. No doubt, Leto made a big impression on Spears. Asked by a reporter two days later what she thought of Leto, Britney smiled and said, "Oh, he's really sweet."
Several days after the two denied all the rumors about their relationship, telling that they were just friends. Later Britney said, "The Jared Leto thing. I'm not trying to date him. I'd never do that - I don't even think that way. But the way they put it on the cover of a magazine, as 'Britney's Revenge' - I saw that and I was like, 'Oh, no!'"
