On June 28, 1999 at "The Amphitheater" in Pompano Beach, Florida, "Jive" recording artist Britney Spears began a headlining US tour in support of her #1, then 4x platinum debut album, "...Baby One More Time." Presented by "Tommy Jeans", the Britney Spears tour continued through September 15 in York, Pennsylvania.
The tour found Britney not only singing her own hits, but also paying tribute to her idols, singing the songs of her idols: Madonna's "Material Girl", Matia Carey's "Open Arms" and two from Janet Jackson, "Nasty Boys" and "Black Cat". Britney's opening acts for this show included a singer named Michael Fredo, Tonny Hilfiger's nephew, Steps, C-Note, P.Y.T. and Sugar Hill Gang, among the others.
The average size stage was decorated with a big golden ladder in the middle. Relief steps gave an improbable effect along with "Britney Spears" inscription above. Both sides of the stage were decorated with semicircular pedestals. The stage was compact but really nice.
After performing "(You Drive Me) Crazy" Britney welcomed the crowed, "I'm happy to be here with you. This is the first tour of my very own and I've made one rule - we're going to have fun! Are you ready?" And when the music started she continued, "Where are my dancers? Ah, here they are!" She wore a pink shiny halter top and white vinyl pants with pink patches on them.
"Soda Pop" performance finished with Britney conversation with the audience. "Before I will sing the next song, I want to ask you a question. How many of you have ever been in love? I know that love is the most tremendous feeling. You are happy and nothing worries you. This song is for all of you." She invited a guest from the audience for the next number "Born to Make You Happy". Her next song "From the Bottom of My Broken Heart" Britney addressed to the crowed again, "I want to tell a little story. Anyone of you can relate to it. You know, I had a boyfriend before he had broken my heart. And I will never love him again. That was a story..."
After a little break Britney changed her outfit into a white pearl dress, black boa, black gloves and black shoes. She performed several cover versions of her idols' songs, including Sher's "The Beat Goes On". After performing "I Will Be There" Britney changed again. This time it was a short white top and a baby blue pants. She performed "Sometimes." A Catholic school uniform was the last outfit of the show and Britney performed "...Baby One More Time."
The tour rolled on throughout the country, thrilling young fans and baffling critics nation-wide. One newspaper noted that Britney proved that "youth is a king in pop culture." While Britney fans loved her energetic performances, the nation's music critics weren't as admiring. They pointed that Britney was lip-synching, referring to focus on her dancing.
